Album MTV Unplugged
Info about song
The track was released as the second and final single from the EP MTV Unplugged in the third quarter of 1992. The protagonist of this big band-style track gets a case of the blues, and tells her lover that she loves him but that he should stop playing mind games, and "if it's over" he should let her go. Carey also gave a choir-backed performance of the song at the 1992 Grammy Awards. This song, though written by Mariah Carey and Carole King, roughly follows the same chord progressions as the end closing theme from Saturday Night Live "Closing Theme (A Waltz In A)". The SNL band horn section was used in the studio recording. Carole King (who showed up as a guest in the SNL band area one evening) worked the basic framework of the chords into "If It's Over".
