Perry was inspired to write the song after she heard the audio book of Eckhart Tolle's self-help guide The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment. The song was produced by Stargate with the American hitmaker Benny Blanco. The Norwegian songwriting and production team were also responsible for the #1 hit "Firework" from Teenage Dream and also manned the boards on the Prism Deluxe edition bonus track, "It Takes Two," again with Blanco.
