Formed in Sydney, Australia, at the end of 1978, the XL CAPRIS soon acquired a healthy following on the punk/alternarive circuit when they formed their own AXLE RECORDS and released two singles and one album in 1980.
January 1st, 1979. New Year's Eve, first gig played in the foyer of the Nimrod Theatre with a PA that would have suited the Hordern Pavilion. The band could be heard at Central Station, the theatre audience left and the place was filled with friends and locals.
Mid January; first "real" gig at Garibaldi's. The band was banned from this venue because an excited fan threw the men's toilet out the window.
February '79, XL CAPRIS played 2 times in Melbourne. January 1st, 1980. Released first single "My City Of Sydney" on AXLE Rds. The single received strong airplay in Sydney, Melbourne, and in California and London-UK (John PEEL radio show) as well.
1980 "Where is Hank?" LP. The songs on the album were mainly written by guitarist Tim Gooding, featuring simple instrumentation, sparse production and the plaintive vocals of Johanna Pigott (bass), singing lyrics that were very Sydney-orientated. Joining Julie Anderson aka Nancy Serapax (drums), former Dragon guitarist Todd Hunter boosted the line-up and a second album was recorded. "Weeds" featured many Pigott/Hunter compositions, obtaining a fuller, more polished sound. The band broke up at the end of 1981.
XL CAPRIS were certainly one of the most original and interesting bands to emerge out of the punk era, but they were unable to achieve any mainstream success. HUNTER returned to the re-formed DRAGON and PIGOTT recorded 3 albums under the name SCRIBBLE before finding acclaim as a song-writer for DRAGON. April 1980,original drummer Julie ANDERSON married the vocalist from UK band THE VAPORS and guitarist Kimble Rendall was a founder-member of the HOODOO GURUS. Tim GOODING returned to stage and screenwriting, writing the book and music for the C & W musical play "King Of Country", and creating and co-writing with PIGOTT the hit tv series "Sweet And Sour".
