Growing up in the fields of experimental and post-industrial music with several projects since the early 1990s, Axel Frank began to adapt a more melodic approach. Under the name Werkraum (German for "work room"), Frank released material on CDRs and multiple compilations in the late '90s and early 2000s, until debuting in 2004 with the full-length "Unsere Feuer brennen!", released on Cold Spring Records.
Werkraum's second album, titled "KristalleIn", followed in 2005, focusing more on melancholic and psychedelic folk tunes. With "Early Love Music", released in 2008, Werkraum received more worldwide recognition. This album showed a characteristic mixture of traditional folk and modern folk rock.
Frank was also a member of the Alpine neofolk band Sturmpercht, where he played under the pseudonym Hanns Aufschring, while his work for live sessions and for studio and mastering engineering continued. In 2009 Werkraum split up with his label Ahnstern/Steinklang as well as Axel Frank’s collaboration with Sturmpercht finished. Since then, new works are in progress.
Several artists from the neofolk scene contributed to the Werkraum albums, including members of the British act Lady Morphia, German singer Antje Hoppenrath, Jason Thompkins of the US band Harvest Rain, and members of the late sixties US folk band Changes.
