Roger Dean, famous for some of his artwork on many progressive rock classic albums, was responsible for the sleeve painting of this album. It marked the third collaboration between the band and Dean, but the first since The magician's Birthday album.
As with the previous album, Different World, all compositions on Sea Of Light were written by the band.
The album was praised by many critics and by fans and some of the songs are still played live during most of the band's tours. This was the album that saw Uriah Heep departing from the often criticised Arena Rock / Pop Metal sound of their 4 previous releases. Sea Of Light contains some traditional hard rock with many elements familiar to the fans of early Heep. It is often considered by fans as the band's return to good shape and more traditional sound.
It was the third of four albums recorded by this line-up of Uriah Heep, which included:
Bernie Shaw
Mick Box
Trevor Bolder
Phil Lanzon
