HISTORY
Four schoolboys who had got voice placing in children's singing group VÕRUKAELAD took up in a town called Võru in April 1989 the available instruments - contrabass, guitar, violin and mandolin and started to make country and folk music. Considering their musical knowledge at that time, this style was the easiest and bearably performable.
AIMS
Any manifestations of the band's way of being are comprised in its name - in one's own way or, in the Võru dialect, UMMAMUUDU. This name underlines the origins of the band and its musical orientation. By performing mostly folk music and their own compositions, their songs in the Võru dialect, the group tries to emphasize the culture of their birthplace. The main purpose of the group is to modernize folk music and perform their own creations. The band has proceeded from the idea - the songs should be either modernized folk music or their own creation ( also including the pieces particularly composed for the group). Band's own creation is definitely similar to the music of other groups, because the members of UMMAMUUDU who are as well the authors get inspiration from them according to their own tastes, but direct covers are not in favour. The band has also actively taken part in projects, for example band's own folk project UMMALEELO; the Võru Folklore Festival; the Rein Rannap Project in 1996 (part of the Tartu Music Days), as well as several performances and recordings with guest musicians. Their most important trip abroad was to the International Folklore Festival in Mölln, North Germany, summer 1993.
The breakthrough to the Estonian hit lists was made in autumn 1994 with the song KÕNÕTRAAT and their popularity was again affirmed with the songs TUNNEN ÄRA, KA SISALIKU TEE, VALGEM POOL, SINUST LAULAN.
FANS
As fans say - the music of UM is peculiar and shows the South Estonian origin of the boys. In addition to the music, the personalities of the boys are expressed with the songs. They have also said that it is very good that the band has been able to unite for example the violin and the sax with other electrical instruments - the sound is fantastic according to the fans. Especially good is the sax in their hit song TUNNEN ÄRA. The existence of numerous fans has created an idea to establish a fan club. UMMAMUUDU is very grateful to its supporters and fans.
ALBUMS
The repertory of UM stretches from folk songs and their arrangements on the one hand and their own compositions on the other, style being quite difficult to determine and mostly dependent on the musical taste of the authors.
