Some fans criticize the album for being too unusual while others praise its emotional complexity citing tracks like "Wailing Wall" and "The Empty World" as among The Cure's very best material to date. "The Top" was also a moderate commercial success which furthered Cure's exposure to music fans around the world. It entered 180th in The Billboard 200 for 1984.
