Since forming in Melbourne in 1997, Tenpenny Joke have been perfecting the art of great songwriting and stellar live shows, appearing at some of Australia’s premier live band venues. Building a massive following after years of writing, recording, independent releases and gigs, the band have seen their local and worldwide profile increase exponentially. Topping the charts of countless internet radio polls & indie music sites, their songs have been featured as the soundtrack to various surfing DVDs and even a Vic Roads advertising campaign.
In April 2004, TPJ completed a tour of Australia’s East Coast, promoting their appearance on the Australian Surfing Life magazine’s DVD, ‘North Shore’. This highly successful venture was followed in July by a 12 date regional tour, which covered all of Victoria’s major country centers. The response was overwhelming, leading to many happy return visits.
Their music videos “Even Harbour” & “Sense” have frequently been included in the line-up of ‘RAGE’, ABC TV’s long-running National Music program. Aside from the solid impression that they have made upon Aussie music circuits, TPJ has also made a significant impact on Americas; getting their sounds out on the US airwaves via one of that country’s most visited rock web sites, Broadjam.com. It is on this site that the band’s first EP, “Sense” appears on six separate charts and has been voted fifth in the World’s top ten best male vocalists, as well as “The best band out of Oz”; and third favorite (overall) on the site’s rock chart.
In November last year, the band locked themselves away in one of Australia’s most pre-eminent recording complexes, Sing Sing Recording Studios, Melbourne. There they stayed until March 2005, emerging after having managed to successfully track, nurture, mix and master their first full-length album. Boasting 15 diverse tracks, the album is unforgettable proof that rock is far from dead - TPJ are breathing new life into it.
Fiercely original while recalling elements of Zeppelin, Floyd, Beatles, Sabbath & various rock greats, it offers something for everyone with its musical mix of light and shade. Bursting at the seams with killer hooks, incredible choruses and roaring guitars!
