Shantalla is five Irishmen and one Scotswoman who all live in Belgium.
Band members: Michael Horgan (uilleann pipes, flute, whistles) Joe Hennon (guitar) Helen Flaherty (vocals, bodhran) Kieran Fahy (fiddle, viola) Gerry Murray (accordeon, bouzouki, mandolin, whistles) Simon Donnelly (guitar, bouzouki, vocals)
Their debut album 'Shantalla' was released in Europe in 1998 and worldwide in Feburary 2000. The album went straight to #2 on the US Celtic radio chart and remained in the top 10 for more than 6 months. Said American newspaper Irish Voice: "I'm not sure how the band's members, all of whom hail from Ireland or Scotland, ended up in the land of mussels, frites and lethally strong beer, but on the strength of this recording Shantalla has to be rated the top traditional band on the Continent."
The band's second CD 'Seven Evenings, Seven Mornings' was released in Europe at the end of 2001. The album featured more self-composed material and contemporary songs as well as traditional Irish and Scottish songs and tunes.
In October 2005 the band went on hiatus with members going solo and joining other bands but was revived in a reunion tour in December 2009.
Their third CD 'Turas' (meaning journey in Irish) was released on 1 July 2011. Read more on Last.fm. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
