Dreaming of You is the last studio album recorded by Selena. It was first released on July 18, 1995 after her death, and re-released in 2002. Dreaming of You was going to enlist fourteen English tracks only four tracks were recorded from late 1994 until March 14, 1995 due to Selena's death on March 31, 1995. The rest of the songs were planned on being recorded from March 31, 1995 until late April 1995 then to be released sometime in the summer of 1995. The album was a commercial success in the United States, where the album was certified 35x platinum (Latin type) by the RIAA for selling over 3.5 million copies. The album also, spent 49 weeks on Billboard Charts in North America. Also, the album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, making Selena the first latin artist to have an album top the chart. History Dreaming of You was to be the first English-language album by Selena, the Spanish-singing superstar who had dominated the Spanish music charts. The album was planned as the vehicle that would introduce Selena to the mainstream market, which had been a major goal throughout her musical career. The album was released by EMI in 1995, in 39 countries around the world. For this album, Selena collaborated with some of the biggest producers and songwriters in the English music market. Songs like "Dreaming of You", written by Franne Golde and Tom Snow, along with "I Could Fall in Love", which both became modest hits on Mainstream and Latin radio stations all over the U.S. and Latin America. Dreaming of You sold 175,000 copies on its first day of release, July 18, 1995. It debuted at number one on Billboard's 200 chart, selling more than 331,000 copies in its first week and knocking off the Pocahontas soundtrack and Michael Jackson from the top spot.[3] EMI Latin's president estimated that the album had actually sold more than 700,000 copies the first week because Billboard did not include discount stores or the small shops specializing in Latin music. Well received by critics[4][5], the album can be described as two mini-albums, one with English tracks and the other with Selena's most memorable hits like "Amor Prohibido," "Como La Flor," and "Bidi Bidi Bom Bom." The Spanish songs had been remixed with more of a Caribbean feel, featuring steel drums and Reggae beats. The album was in the recording process when Selena was shot and killed on March 31, 1995. That morning, Selena was due to show up at 11 AM to record the song "Oh No". No recordings of the song exist, but a television interview revealed Selena singing a few seconds of the song during her interview. "Oh No" was later recorded in Spanish by her brother's band, Kumbia Kings, on the album Amor, Familia Y Respeto. The song "Baby, I'm in Heaven" was scheduled to be recorded in April 1995, but Selena never got a chance to sing and record it. A demo was being planned, but this was later turned over and given to Rebbie Jackson, who sang it as a tribute to Selena on Rebbie's album released in 1998. Another song which was to be recorded in April was "If You Only Knew". This song was never completed. The composer Keith Thomas who wrote "I Could Fall In Love", never finished "If You Only Knew" and revealed the song's fate when he made an appearance on the A&E series, Biography which talked about Selena's life and death. There were four English-language songs that had been recorded, but it was decided that they would not be released on the Dreaming of You album. The songs were "Where Did the Feeling Go?", "Only Love", "Is It the Beat?", and "A Boy Like That", from the musical West Side Story. Recordings Selena was signed by EMI Latin President Jose Behar who originally signed Selena because he saw crossover potential. In 1989, he attempted to begin production on an English album with Selena, but the head of the company declined the request. Before singing to EMI, Selena recorded three songs "Where Did the Feeling Go?", "Is It the Beat?", and "Only Love". In 1992, Selena began telling her fans that there were plans to record an English-language album. In 1993, Selena was still unable to record the album, dealing with the demanding questions about the release date and the pressure from the press and fans, she collapsed. In 1993, Jose Behar went to the studio and told EMI that if Selena didn't get signed for a crossover album, she would walk and find another recording company who had offered her a contract. In late 1993, Selena was signed to EMI partner, SBK Records, to begin recording. Selena began recording her first track "I Could Fall in Love" in late 1994, she later finished the track. Selena then began to record "God's Child (Baila Conmigo)", a duet with David Byrne in January 1995. In the month of February 1995, Selena recorded "Captive Heart" and "I'm Getting Used to You". On March 5, 1995, she recorded her final English track "Dreaming of You". After Selena's death the song "Baby, I'm in Heaven" was given to Rebbie Jackson to record. The song "Oh No (I'll Never Fall in Love)" was seen all over YouTube pages and was given to Selena's brother AB, he recorded the song in Spanish. Keith Thomas made an appearance on A&E series Biography and told the story of the track "If You Only Knew". Selena was going to record fourteen tracks and the album itself was being planned for a summer release.
