Quatro Ventos was established by Emanuel Pessanha in 1996 and since that time created a new audience for strong and successful fado music with the on-stage accompaniment of three enthusiastic and skilled musicians, Wout Pennings playing classical lead guitar and Portuguese guitar; violinist Aili Deiwiks and double bass players Lucien Matheeuwsen/Norbert Leurs,.
Quatro Ventos created their debut album, Flor do Mar in 1996. It was recorded in the Studio Vale de Lobos in Lisbon, owned by the famous singer Rui Veloso. On this CD Emanuel Pessanha sings a duet with Rui Veloso, San Miguel, a dignified homage to the mid-atlantic homeland island of Pessanha that is one of the Azorian archipelago. This CD was followed in 1999 by Valsa de Lobos and in the following year by a live album called Uma Noite de Fado. In 2004, Barco de Papel came out, which contains a beautiful duet with Fernando Lameirinhas. This album has received high praise from press and public. Quatro Ventos’ most recent album, Vozes do silêncio, was released in December 2006. The title track is a surprising duet between Pessanha and the American singer/songwriter Iain Matthews.
Comments from the Dutch press: “It is music that catches the heart with passion. Emanuel Pessanha has a beautiful thick dark brown voice which he uses to maximum effect to balance the senses of relaxation and passion”. De Volkskrant “Wout Pennings is a virtuoso guitar player and a pleasure not to be missed”. De Gelderlander Read more on Last.fm.
