Purple Rain was founded in autumn 2000 by Philip Bölter (electric guitar, born:1988) and Florian Bölter (bass, born:1985). Katharina C. was singing, Carolina B. played the drums. The setlist included famous songs like "Sweet Home Alabama", "Born to be wild" and "Heart of Gold". In 2001 the two girls missed some rehearsals, so the band disbanded. Florian played together with some new musicians and they decided to take Philip into the band. The name "Purple Rain" was taken again and songs from Deep Purple, Neil Young & Crazy Horse, Black Sabbath and Ten Years After were played. After the first gig in December 2001 the guitarist Alexander S. left the band. Purple Rain remained as a trio: Florian Bölter (b,v), Philip Bölter (g,v), Erik Hessberger (d). In 2003 and 2004 the band played many gigs.
In summer 2004 Erik was replaced by Adrian Hauck, who was supposed to be the perfect drummer for the band. Erik's commitment for the band disappeared and Adrian who was 26 at this time had experience, so he became the drummer of Purple Rain. The old songs were rehearsed again. But instead of writing own songs, Adrian preferred to play hits like "Old Love", "Take it easy" and "Breakfast in America". That kind of music was new to the usual listeners but Adrian liked it more than the former Purple Rain style. Florian and Philip got the feeling to play music only for money. Their actual motivation to send a message and to be creative in songwriting and playing became stronger on this way. There were also personal aspects between the 3 musicians (different views of motivation and reasons to play music), so that Adrian decided to leave the band in summer 2005. A new drummer was found very fast. Benjamin Treis (born:1989) became new drummer for Purple Rain. With him Philip and Florian could finally rehearse their own songs which they wrote between 2002 and 2005. The band played less coversongs (only some of Neil Young, Jimi Hendrix and UFO) but more Purple Rain songs like "This ain't you", "Liar", "Pissing in the Wind", "Living my Dream", "Before the TV's dreamed" and "Nobody".
In autumm 2006 Benjamin quit the band. Florian got the phone number of Marc Beier (born:1983) who finally jammed with Philip and Florian. They wrote two new songs together, which was the reason to keep Marc as new drummer. Read more on Last.fm.
