"For a long time now, I've been wanting to make an album that had nothing but my voice, and what's within. It has been my biggest challenge, full of joy but also merciless. It takes me back not only to my musical roots, but also to all my roots, my father, my mother, my grandfather - the latter's song appears at the end of this album.
The folk songs I sing here are my old favorites, stones that hide secret treasures. My own songs, meanwhile, were born along the way. I've traveled to places where there is both anger and sadness, but also lots of joy and laughter, so I play and even clown around. Anyway, I only wrestle with myself now - in the end I am the one who cries and I am the one who laughs.
My first big encounter with music in my childhood was with a prayer by the Hungarian peasant singer Simon Ferenc Józsefné, "I Awake at the Morning Dawn." Just one voice appeared on the recording, but the sharp, powerful sound filled the room, and the ornamentation glittered on the melody line like pearls. Sounds and silence together made the music, and the whole thing had a tranquility, a rhythm of both breath and spirit. The meaning of the words were sharpened, and all of a sudden I felt that this woman, crossing space and time, was singing to me in my room - I could feel every vibration of her spirit, I was able to climb into her skin.
I want to carry this further and share it. I want whoever hears these songs and this music to feel every vibration of my voice and my spirit, and to feel their own spirit as well as a result. Perhaps it won't resonate with everyone the same way, but for me, it's worth it just for the resonance itself."
