According to legend, the name was given to the band in 1983 by Husker Du bassist Greg Norton. Treece has said that the band was influenced by Bad Brains, Theater of Hate, The Ruts, Scream, Minor Threat and other hard edged bands of that era that were also jazz & reggae influenced. in the late 80's while McRad was on hiatus, Treece later tried out as the replacement singer for H.R in the Bad Brains, but eventually later ended up as their drummer for a spell when the group was signed to Epic.
