He discovered the diatonic accordion, or melodeon, during a Cajun concert at the FĂȘte de l'Huma (the yearly fair of the French Communist Party), in the early 1970s. He became a folk musician, touring with Occitan band Perlimpinpin Folc, and collected tunes and songs in rural southern France.
