Jack Carty (born 20 April 1987 in Bellingen, NSW) is an Australian musician and songwriter currently residing in Sydney, NSW.
Carty grew up in the sleepy coastal town of Bellingen NSW, where he had the time, the space and the support to write as honestly and sing as loudly as he possibly could. This sheltered upbringing left an indelible mark on his music that remains even after moving to Sydney at the ripe old age of 16.
When he arrived Carty submerged himself in the Sydney music scene and its culture, attending a performing arts high school, jamming and writing with anyone he could and playing venues large and small all over town.
“I came from a town that ran on its own time, if you told someone you’d be somewhere at 3pm you would rock up at 3:30. Suddenly I was thrown into this fast paced scene of incredibly talented people – I wanted to make the most of it, I didn’t want to be left behind”.
Carty's thoughtful, melodic and beautiful folk songs ensured he wasn’t. He spent several years writing and touring, playing some of Australia’s best-known venues with some of Australia’s best loved artists (Tim Freedman, Shayne Nicholson and Lovers Electric) along the way, and all the while honing his craft.
2009 was a big year with a deal with exclusive Sydney based indie label “Gigpiglet Recordings” (also home to ex Machine Gun Fellatio front man Pinky Beecroft and his band The White Russians and critically acclaimed Australian born Indonesian based singer/songwriter Athron). Wasting no time Jack is currently putting the finishing touches on a record scheduled for release through Gigpiglet / Inertia Distribution in October.
Combine this with a solid schedule of tours booked and running into the new year and recent achievements including gaining video airplay on Channel V for independently released track “Good Old Town” and being selected by the Australian Performing Rights Association (APRA) to showcase an original track at their inaugural international songwriters convention “Song Summit” and its fair to say that things are looking up for Jack. In Typical country fashion he is taking it all in his stride:
“At this stage I just want to play my songs for people and be able to pay my rent you know? Anything more than that is a massive bonus.”
