Sumner is the daughter of The Police frontman Sting and actress Trudie Styler. In 2008, she signed with Island Records.
After spending time writing and recording in Sweden, she released the debut single "Caesar" on 31 January 2010, which features Swedish singer Robyn. Her debut album The Constant followed on 1 October 2010.
