Based in Cape Town and captained by South African singer-songwriter and guitarist Donovan Copley, the band is a densely African fusion of powerful, uplifting sounds and vocals. Since it originated in 2005 as the brainchild of Copley, the band has grown from strength to strength and within 3 months Hot Water was booked to play one of South Africa’s most prestigious events: Kirstenbosch ‘Summer Sunset’ concerts.
Since then Hot Water have created a fan base which is as diverse as they are, and through an organic process touched the hearts of many South Africans and tourists - adults and children alike.
To date Hot Water have released two albums, Home (2005) and One (2008) to great critical acclaim. Their sound ranges from upbeat South African jives, Hopping Blues, Modern Folk ballads and inspiring cross-cultural gems. Their winning first single Bushfire is currently being screened throughout Europe and the US in Italian company, Primigi’s 07/08 commercial campaigns. Adding to this exciting achievement another Hot Water song, the soulful Thembi has been selected for an IEO commercial, also currently being screened in Italy.
One of the more significant highlights for the band after a short time was to be a part of the Human Rights Day Concert being filmed for BBC World. Hot Water were featured in an episode of Destination Music, which aired internationally on high rotation worldwide.
Hot Water was voted Best Band in South Africa by Mens Health Magazine September 2008.
As for the elements which make up Hot Water:
Donovan Copley: Spearhead of the band on guitar, lead vocals, hang and harmonica.
Leon Visser: Afrikaans mother tongue brings his warm vocals, and adds percussion, hang and djembe to the mix.
Bongani Nikelo: Hailing from Philipi Township, Bongani plays bass guitar and assists with backing vocals. A seasoned musician who has traveled the world performing with various African outfits.
James Kaye: On Drum Kit; After leaving South Africa to find his feet abroad, James realized that he wanted to come home and play South African Music with a South African band
Siyanda Gulwa: African Dance
Hot Water represents the great diversity that embodies the South African nation. It is no surprise that 5 tracks from their album Home, have been chosen to appear on the international EDEL release 'A Day in Cape Town'.
The future for Hot Water holds many exciting possibilities. Hot Water will be playing prestigious Hague Jazz Festival in Holland in May 09 and have an exciting array of shows lined up for the rest of this year.
3) Hot Water was a 90s punk rock band featured on the Gammon Records compilation Show & Tell: A Stormy Remembrance of TV Theme Songs with their cover of the "Dukes Of Hazzard" theme song.
