His career as a singer began in the late 1940s where he won some amateur contests. In 1950 he got his first professional job as a singer, a commitment at the restaurant "Dutch town" on Amager. The same year he began to sing on the radio where he quickly became popular. In 1957 he won with Birthe Wilke, the first Danish Melodi Grand Prix with the song The ship will sail in the night.
