Freaks of Desire were an electronic rock band based in London . The line up consisted of Tommy James ( Vocals , Guitar ), Tony Wilson ( Bass , Keyboards ), Mal Campbell ( Keyboards , Guitar, ) and Hans Perrson ( Drums ). Formally Love's Young Nightmare the band underwent a name change upon signing to Dave Stewart's Anxious Records in 1993. Transitioning form Brit Pop pioneers to electronic art rockers, the name Freaks of Desire was decided upon after a heated discussion with Bob Geldof and Dave Stewart during sessions of the band's debut album, Intoxicated . Produced by Bruce Lampcov , recording began at Matt Johnson's ( The The ) studio , The War Room and originally mixed at The Hit Factory in London in the summer of 1993
Following their debut UK tour opening for The Damned, the band became increasingly uncomfortable playing the regular London live circuit and chose to appear at London clubs and underground parties delivering short midnight sets between DJs at places such as Magic , The Raw Club & Fantastic .
The first single " Strange Things " was remixed by Mark Stent and included an extended version which began to filter through the clubs of London and became a DJ favorite through the spring of 1994. A video directed by Dave A Stewart at The Church Studios and on location in various was met with mixed media attention pushing the bands concept even further underground.
The 2nd 12 " single , Messiah, following a remix by Bob Rosa entered Tower Records dance charts at number 3 in December 1994. Featuring artwork by photographer Ian Davis and footage from their live appearances which had now become more circus than rock show with on stage dancers atmospheric light shows and an outlandishly dressed audience.
Film Director Paul Verhoven, following a performance at Heaven in London, invited them to include a track for his upcoming movie Showgirls alongside David Bowie, Prince and U2 . "Beast Inside" was recorded at Church studios and remixed in Electric Lady NYC once again by Bob Rosa as the band headed to Las Vegas to film what would be their third and final video .
Through 1995 the band continued recording and remixing more tracks for the still unreleased album "Intoxicated" at House of Sound and Electric Lady in New York while shows at Jackie 60 , CBGB's , Don Hills continued to build the bands reputation for chaotic club performances and uncompromising attitudes
With no US label release commitment and the folding of Dave Stewart's Anxious Records label Freaks of Desire's album now 3 years in the making was shelved . The 4th single "Religion" also remixed by Mark Stent was manufactured in 1996 but never released .
The bands final UK show was at the London Astoria 2 and on signing to Iguana Records in 1997 the band relocated to New York . Following more recording sessions with Bob Rosa and Barrett Jones In Seattle the band finally gave way to internal pressures and split in the winter of 1998.
"Intoxicate" is planned for digital release in 2013
