The album is generally criticised by the fans and the musicians themselves for lacking a true band spirit. It is well-known that tensions within the band appeared again during the recording sessions and led to the firing of Ian Gillan 2 years later. Various member of the band also expressed their regrets that they made a mistake in trying to achieve a modern sound, which was not what fans expected from Deep Purple.
It was the twelfth album by Deep Purple, sixth by the Mark II line-up and second after the band's reunion. After the tour in support of the album, this line-up ceased to exist only to reunite one more time for a short time in 1993.
