First he gained fame in 2010, when he was a contestant in Survivor: Nicaragua, where he was runner-up of Jud "Fabio" Birza. Born in Florida, Rice grew up on a farm in Asheville, North Carolina. He attended AC Reynolds High School and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he was a football linebacker, but did not pursue an NFL career due to an injury. After graduating from UNC, Rice was selected to participate in the Hendrick Motorsports team of mechanics as the rear wheel support for Ryan Newman's Nationwide Series car.
