The CANZONIERE GRECANICO SALENTINO is the first folklore research group in Puglia. It has been active since 1975 and has always been present at musical events connected to folk. Since 1975 the band has promoted modern popular communication in the contemporary situation, without reviving past traditions, without searching for a lost identity; not a “nostalgic-archaeological” recovery but a process of independent expression. The CANZONIERE GRECANICO SALENTINO has a variety of themes: from the great energy of the pizzica pizzica (the typical dance of Salento) to the sweetness of Salento love songs, from the merriness of the typical southern Italy brass band to an ironic look on modern themes. Respecting one of the most peculiar habits of popular culture, the CANZONIERE today transmits its experience and knowledge from father to son, from generation to generation, faithfully following the practice of oral transmission.
For their skill, commitment and experience the CANZONIERE GRECANICO SALENTINO are recognized in the national and international field; The CANZONIERE frequently collaborates with TV and radio programmes dedicated to folk music, it has also appeared in many films and the songs have been used for their soundtracks.
The band takes part in the main folk music festivals held in Italy and abroad: the performances in Greece, Germany, France, Holland, Belgium, Hungary, United States, have always been very popular with the public and with the press.

Programme
The selection of songs (alternatively love songs, work songs, “questua” songs, stornelli, serenades and pizzicas) can vary depending on the situation and the location of the concert. An important aspect of the show is a folk dancer who performs on stage. Therefore the band’s repertoire is suitable for various contexts, such as squares or theatres.
