Sometimes I wonder if its easier to "get" music when you know a little personal information about who is creating it. So, I'm going to introduce you to my friend, Mike. Now, keep in mind that Mike can be a sad dude. He's not always sad, but it would seem as though that's how he wants to present himself musically. He's pretty good at guitar, he likes hockey, and he likes sausages with his pasta. One time his mom bought him some really ugly white track sneakers and we made fun of him. He brushed it off and scored three touchdowns. Yeah, stay with me, this is important. Words like "angular" are sometimes used to describe his music, but I think he's been settling down as he gets older, becoming more sophisticated... Playing music for grown-ups who don't care about fashion or looking cool.
Mike doesn't care about the current trends in "indie" music. You won't find any spiraling psychedelia here, or even reverb-soaked beach pop. The kid likes riffs and the late 90s. His arrangements subtly reference the works of Joan of Arc, Pavement, Polvo, Pinebender, and others. But he's kind of sad, you know? So imagine that sound with an armful of opiates, choking out a tear or two through the guitar.
The instrumentation on "Dancing is Depressing" is generally sparse, slow, and brooding -- intricate guitar noodlings over a foundation of bass, off-kilter drums, and some piano. Lyrically, Mike uses difficult puns with steady doses of profanity, cynicism, and awkwardness.
