In 1978 she participated for the first time in the national final of Eurovision Song Contest and her first solo album came out in 1980 and she had her first solo concert in the Swedish Theatre of Turku.
Next breakthrough was Knokke Cup 1983 show competition in Belgium where she got the award of the best soloist. In 1984 she returned to Finnish ESC semifinals, the other song, flamenco-inspired Sä liian paljon vaadit, proceeded to the final reaching the 3rd position. The other Elän hetkessä became the title of the next album.
In 1989 she had 2 songs in the Finnish ESC final. In a very close race she took the 1st and 3rd places and the ticket to the Eurovision Song Contest final in Lausanne, Switzerland. Some press and audience were skeptical about a Spanish rumba representing Finland, but the result was exceptionally good. Anneli's performance La dolce vita (music Matti Puurtinen lyrics Turkka Mali) finished 7th and it's still the best position Finland has ever reached in ESC in Finnish language!
