The name Ana Pupedan means “one in the afternoon” in a local dialect of the Slovene language but some might think that it's the first and last name of a girl. The band was established at the end of 1992 in Pivka, Slovenia.
After a year of playing, they performed at the festival of new breakthrough bands in Slovenia called Novi Rock (New Rock). Their appearance at this festival caused them to become one of the most interesting and desirable rock bands in Slovenia. Ana Pupedan has released three albums so far: Anje pupedanjü (1995), Ante prupagandni balar (1998) and the last album, which is without a name (2002).
The band has also performed over 400 concerts, which means 40 – 60 gigs per year. This is quite a bit, considering that the population of Slovenia is only 2 million. Ana Pupedan has successfully toured the east coast of the US and has also had concerts in Italy, Denmark, Belgium, Ukraine, Balkan countries such as Croatia, Serbia and Montenegro, Macedonia and Bulgaria. In addition to these concerts, the band has performed on a number of radio and TV shows in Slovenia. Ana Pupedan is one of the most successful independent bands in Slovenia. The members of the band stand behind their music, not record labels and managers. Their attitude and unique approach towards music gives them their respectable status in the Slovenian music scene. Their musical approach is a mixture of rock, punk, blues, ska, reggae, jazz, country, alternative and folk. Despite the influences of these genres, it is the ability to shape their own music that makes Ana Pupedan’s sound so significant and unique. A very important element of Ana Pupedan’s music is their funny but critical and satirical lyrics. Songs depict the ups and downs of everyday life as well as all the nonsense in the world. Ana Pupedan has also been very successful when performing abroad in countries where the Slovene language is not spoken. This success can be attributed to the ability to have strong live performances, sing in harmony and a-capela, improvise, have contact with the audience and finally, their old school outfits. There’s no doubt at all that Ana Pupedan is a live band.
The music of Ana Pupedan has been changing and developing through the years because they don’t want to stick with one approach like craftsmen, but look forward to developing their musical approach and research new possibilities and directions of their musical style. This makes Ana Pupedan very undpredictable. Or like they say laughing: ‘Anything more conventional would be naive to expect from us’ and that’s true for sure. Some song title translations: Ruf An (Hot line 0190 422 422), My Country, Punctured Ark, Rissoto Con Gatto (Rise with cat), What Can I Do, Manager is Eating Me, Accordion Player, Drunk, Leasing, Tectonics, Up Against The Wall, Rednecks, Soft Dicks, Sexy Stories On Audio Cassette, Don’t Spit On Me,…
